The initial topic for this project was Sexual Liberation and The Evolution of Lingerie. In this, I wanted to discuss how the sexual liberation movement in the 1960s-1980s affected the design and the public view of lingerie that would come over time. The creation of the topic stemmed from my interest in social issues and my love for lingerie designs. However, further research made me shift my focus to the Sexual Liberation Movement aspect of the topic. From here, I explored the background of the movement on how it came to be, the cause its fighting for, and its impact. Afterwards, I pinpointed which aspect of the movement that I wanted to focus on, which is the movement’s aim to normalize sexual expression and exploration.

Since this movement was created in the 1960s, I wanted to create a topic that is more relevant to current times. This made me turn to another aspect of this movement, the normalization of pornography and sex-work. Due to technological advancement, pornographic content is readily available on the Internet. By correlating these two aspects together, I learned about the term Digital Sex-workers. Which I used as an umbrella term for adult actors and independent sex-workers in this project.

To further learn about its impact through the normalization of sexual expression and exploration, I created an online survey that asked questions regarding the respondent’s porn consumption behaviour and their views on digital sex-workers. I used digital sex-workers as my main subject because they fit my criteria of a modern point of view and the specific aspect of the movement that I’m focusing on, which is the normalization of pornography and sex-work. Basing off the answers, I further narrowed down the scope and created my final product which aim was to learn how young adults in Malaysia view individuals (digital sex-workers) that feels liberated through sexual expression of pornographic and erotic content.
