Week 2

For my "Everything About Bread" project, my topic revolves around The Ethicality of Mica Mining. I chose this topic because in my Animation Project where I talk about the Poor Working Conditions of Victorian Era Bakers, I find that similar problems such as poor working conditions, numerous health problems, and mistreatment of workers still prominent in the modern-day labour-intensive workplace.

For my concept, I chose mica usage in makeup as my overall topic as makeup is one of the few main categories that use mica in a large amount other than being used in electrical products. Make-up also has a large consumer base and is present everywhere we go. As a consumer of make-up myself, I would like to be more conscious and aware of how the ingredients in something that I use on a daily basis is sourced and the ethicality behind it.

Another reason why I chose it is partly because I was inspired by this documentary released by VICE a few months ago where it talked about the usage of child labour and poor working conditions of mica miners and ever since then, I've been really intrigued by how so many days to day items are created with its consumer knowing little to none about what's going on behind the scenes.

Execution wise, I decided to go for a satirical makeup packaging and again, I was inspired by this satire Adobé Photoshop program as a makeup product that makes fun of the high amount of post-production retouching on celebrities and models that magazines tend to market as "natural beauty" and overall giving their audience a very unhealthy and warped sense of personal body image.
