Four Fields of Design by Tharp and Tharp 2009
This week we were briefed on our second project titled Graphic Design Map. For this project, we are to research on different types of design and group some advertising examples to its respective group. The four fields of design that we were to do some reading on includes:
Commercial
Experimental
Responsible
Discursive
Commercial Design
The general take on graphic design
Appeals and runs by the market need and wants
A good commercial design promotes a product or business to its intended market and is able to generate a revenue from it.
Experimental Design
The main aim is exploration, experimentation, and discovery of different techniques and style.
The process is usually the main focus rather than the outcome
Used to help create multiple samples and possibilities with differing styles rather than focusing solely on market needs
Responsible Design
Primary theme is to raise social awareness with appealing or sensible design to target the market with serious topics
Topics talk about sensitive or ignored issues
Ex: Abuse against men and women, Importance of safe sex etc.
Discursive Design
Main focus is to encourage discussion/debate and awareness of certain topics
Common topics often centre around human psychology, sociology, and ideology as those are personal and sensitive topics that differ from one person to another
The design is uncommon in the general market as they are personal works to either be exhibited, printed, or turned into films
