For this week's class, we went over our 3rd project brief, which was the Photonovel project. Along with the brief, we were also given a group assignment to do some research about the project and present it next week, which is something that's still in progress with my group.
From what I can understand through the brief, we basically have to create a storyline about being an outsider- not literal- and present the story using a photonovel format. An example that we were given was an LGBT character with unknowing family members/friends.
I did some light research and reading about photonovels just to further understand what it is and from what I've gathered, the most popular types of photo novels are the direct adaptation from an already existing movie or tv series where they reuse photos and stills from said shows and put it into a book format. Kind of like a comic book or manga except they aren't drawings just photographs with added texts to give it some context.
A famous example of a film photonovel is from the famous TV Show franchise Star Trek. There are numerous photonovel created for this tv series and despite the high amount produced, I've never really known of its existence till a few hours ago. Which is quite weird considering how famous this show is. Or maybe because it's been long outdated by the time I was born. But anyway, moving on, these photonovels also served as other means for rewatching the show as VHS tapes weren't that commonplace at the moment so there weren't many options when one wants to rewatch an episode. Thus, the creation of these photonovels allowed fans to rewatch the same episode.
In terms of future development, I don't particularly have much in mind yet except for wanting to make a solid storyline for my work and look up more examples of other photo novels that are available.
