theme

The overall theme of my projects for this subject was to explore on the layers that makes up ones emotions. the specific lense that I'm exploring is through the negative and postive spectrum. What qualifies as negative and positive is used loosely in this project, as what one might clasify as such differs from one person to another.

However, for my ease of research, negative falls under strong emotions you dont feel on a daily basis, or something you dont discuss on a daily basis.

The positive emotions are more on a lighter sense of positivity. Which is about appreciating the small things in life. It doesn't have to make you overly happy, but enought to feel content with it.

And based on the negative and positive spectrum focus, I wanted to find a middle ground where these two can co-exist. which made me think of the concept of two sides of the same coin.

topic development

The concept really stuck with me and I wanted to develop it into something thats more tangible. and it led me to the concept of life and death. Whilst researching the concept of life and death, I kept on thinking about floral imageries as its an element that works in both a negative and postive setting. Some settings examples includes leaving flowers on a grave, or giving buying a boquet for a joyous celebration.

This interchangable meaning also led me to the fictional disease called Hanahaki Disease. Its a condition that causes flowers to grow out of the patient's lungs due to unrequited love.  I think its a very fitting research start point for my two sides of the same coin as flowers are generally perceived as something gentle, yet in this case, this gentle thing is the oen causing death. And this further solidified my intent of using floral motifs in my project.

From here, I looked into the life cycle of plants and humans and try to see any correlation where these two would overlap. And the moment would be during a person's death.

Where in time of their death, the freshly picked flowers that's placed with them would decay alongside their corpse. showing the short-lived moment of the flower's life cycle. Through developing this idea, I reached my final idea of this topic, which is to experience the cycle of life and death at your own comfort.

To showcase the life and death cycle experience, I used plants as the medium of this project. The concept of it would be that, its a limited time event in partnership with a plant store.

And the user will purchase a box with a random plant inside, and they can try their best to take care of the plant within the event time frame.

The general outline for the user experience is as shown above. The reason why I went with the idea of creating an event website/community tab is because I feel like simply purchasing the plant box would get my message across fully. With this website, I can engage with the customers more and through this engagement, they would be more likely to care about my message with this project.

references & art direction

Artstyle wise, I wanted to keep my colour scheme as minimal as possible to maintain a sense of harmony, but also striking enough to catch one's eye.

So to emulate said look, I took a lot of inspiration from these posters as I find that the colours and the design elements complement each other well.
