Topic title

The title of my topic is How Young Adults in Malaysia Views Sex-Work. The reason why I chose said topic is that I wanted to view the impact of the Sexual Liberation Movement through the lenses of a conservative country such as Malaysia, as opposed to a more liberal country like the United States, where this movement came to be.

Topic development

My initial topic was Sexual Liberation and The Evolution of Lingerie. In this, I would like to discuss how the sexual liberation movement in the 1960s-1980s affected the design and the public view of lingerie that would come over time. Lingerie in its essence is the most feminine and private form of clothing that a woman can wear. It can help in setting one’s mood and feeling for the day. From feeling the mystique allure that is often marketed with traditional lingerie, to feeling confident and cosy in the modern age of undergarment variety. These differences between traditional and modern underwear underlying messages are what I would like to focus on. How did the lingerie industry that used to focus on conforming women to society’s ideal body expectation shift its focus in making a woman feel confident and comfortable in their own skin?

However, after further discussion and research, I shifted my focus to the Sexual Liberation Movement aspect of the topic. Doing so allowed me to cover a broader topic and explore the few main points that made the movement, its causes, and effects.

To start off, The Sexual Liberation Movement is a movement that started in the United States in the 1960s-198s. Fundamentally, its aim was to normalize sexual exploration and experimentation. This included the normalisation of sex outside of marriage/ hook-up culture, exploration of one’s sexuality, sex work, masturbation, and control over one’s body.

Overall, it allowed individuals, especially those in the minority group (women & LGBTQ+) to be sexually liberated as through sexual exploration and independence. From here, I created a list with the topics + specific issues + views that I wanted to explore and correlating them to the modern view.

Ultimately, I noticed that my core focus leaned towards female sexual pleasure, personal choice, and going against the sexist notion of society. And the specific issue that seemed to fall under all 3 of these is sex-work. This is because sex-work is inherently seen as a degrading and morally unjust to society, especially those with tight religious views.

However, in modern times, sex-work is seen as a form of liberation for those involved in it. The form of sex-work that I will be referencing to in this context revolves more around ‘digital sex-work.Where it heavily involves independent pornographic content creator such as cam-girls or lewd/erotic photographic through sites such as Chaturbate and OnlyFans. The digitalisation of sex-work also allows for high availability of pornographic content, majorly for young adults due to its digital nature.

Taking the digitalisation as a modern point-of-view context, I wanted to view the impact of this movement through the lenses of a conservative country such as Malaysia, as opposed to a more liberal country like the United States, where this movement came to be. This leads me to the creation of my topic: How young adults in Malaysia view Sex-work.
