3 Potential Topics


Part A of our Translation and Transmission project requires us to provide 3 potential topics and choose one that we would use throughout the whole semester. We are to "choose a theme and use a specific lens in order to provoke an audience."


Theme: Science, Economics, Politics, Society

Society Lens: Freedom, Truth, Individualism, Collectivism, Ownership, Ethics


Below, I'll provide said topics, explanation of it and the main idea that I want to research and expand on.


 

Topic 1: Sexual Liberation and The Evolution of Lingerie


For this topic, I would like to discuss how the sexual liberation movement in the 1960s-1980s affected the design and the public view of lingerie that would come over time. Lingerie in its essence is the most feminine and private form of clothing that a woman can wear. It can help in setting one’s mood and feeling for the day. From feeling the mystique allure that is often marketed with traditional lingerie, to feeling confident and cosy in the modern age of undergarment variety. These differences between traditional and modern underwear underlying messages are what I would like to focus on. How did the lingerie industry that used to focus on conforming women to society’s ideal body expectation shift its focus in making a woman feel confident and comfortable in their own skin?



 


Topic 2: Fan Content and Its Effect on The Media We Consume



Fan content will and always has been prevalent in media culture. The general media that tends to commonly gain these fan contents are usually television shows, movies, comics, and books, and they tend to come in the form of written works, drawings, or videos. These fan contents are usually appreciated by the creators as they are seen as a form of appreciation of the media they create and means that they have an audience that enjoys it. However, fan content can directly or indirectly affect the creator as they feel the need to please their fans. This action can have multiple effects on let’s say a TV show. The storyline will deviate from the main direction and the characters will act out of character. Thus, making the show lose its appeal. So, for this topic, I would like to explore the negatives and positives of fan content and its effect on said media.



 


Topic 3: How Video Games’ Achievements Affect its Players


Achievements in video games are one of the contributing components that makes playing and completing a video game enjoyable. It is a form of motivator to encourage the players to explore the game thoroughly to discover hidden locations, collect all the collectables and completing all the side quests. These examples are the main types of achievements that one can find in almost every video game. Completing achievements give players a sense of accomplishment and the harder it is, the bigger the sense of fulfilment. Unlocking these achievements also grants players an extra boon ranging from in-game points and rewards to unlockable game art. In a way, these achievements serve as a reward system for the players and acknowledgement for their efforts. However, the number of achievements and the enjoyability of unlocking it can have an effect on how players enjoy the game, their motivation and performance, and overall experience with a game- which is what I intend to research on.
