Entry to Part 2

Updated: Aug 28, 2020

1. Based on the presentation and work from Part 1, what aspect of your work do you feel needs improvement?

Based on my presentation and the feedback given, I want to improve more on the type of data that I collected by exploring other opinions rather than only presenting one survey answer. E.x interviewing digital sex-workers as I have never gotten around to doing that since I was just too nervous to talk to others. I would also like to improve on the visualisation of my data, especially in terms of design choices and typography usage.

2. What are your initial ideas for the outcome of your envisioned information piece*? Some questions to help you:

a. What would you say is the ultimate purpose of your envisioned information piece? It might help to think about why you chose your topic in the first place

Overall, the ultimate purpose of my envisioned information piece to know the view of young adults my age on digital sex workers + talk about the view of said digital sex-workers on the increasing popularity of online sex work. It's quite a small topic, but I'm personally really interested in this thing because I'm quite conflicted by the sudden normalisation of online sex-work towards teenagers who have just turned 18.

I didn't take screenshots because I haven't started on this work yet, but there are two instances when I was on Twitter (embarrassing) and there's these two online "personalities" or "influencers" who recently turned 18 and they were promoting their OnlyFans. They have different situations of course. Online Personality A started it because she wanted to pay for some medical bills and since she couldn't go out and do work, she stated that this was probably the best work choice that she has at the moment. Whereas Online Personality B did a really weird "hype" countdown about her creating an OnlyFans on her page when she was 17 till the moment she turned 18. The situation feels off-putting to me because:

1), there are some grown-ass adults who are in their late 20s following her and the thought of having a grown adult being hyped up and waiting to look at sexualised pictures of you the moment you turn 18 so it's "legal" is honestly disgusting and just screams predatory.

2), joining an adult platform when you've just turned 18 is quite a brave move in my opinion, but, I am curious to know if doing so will have an impact towards their mental state in the future.

I know I went on an unwarranted tangent here and yes, I don't condone slut-shaming people and their choices as that is their own personal life. Personally, I think it's great that women, who have been sexualised unwarrantedly by men are taking control of the sexualisation and turning it into a profitable business by capitalising on "horny" people. ( I don't have a better term, I apologize.) However, at the same time, I'm also curious to know how these digital sex-workers will fare in the future in terms of the saturated market, profitability, and their mental health. I apologize for the tangent but I just wanted to lay down a groundwork and reclarify why I wanted to do this topic in the first place as a personal brain refresher, and also to help me visualise how I want to move on with my data.

b. What do you hope to achieve with the piece?

Overall, I want to present the point of view of young adults towards digital sex-work and quite possibly have an option for the people who view it to key in their own thoughts so I can do a compare and contrast from opinions from a small survey vs general public?

c. How does the data from your research contribute to the design of the piece?

So, actually getting back to my envisioned piece, I would like to create something along the lines of an interactive digital display? or create some physical items (idk lingerie?)

that correlates to digital sex-work that can be interacted by showing digital data when scanned?

Data included:

- Opinions from 1st survey

- Answer from the interview ( actually do this part!!!)

- Present it in data form? or more of a sentences form

3. What design processes excite you and why?

In terms of design processes, I really like hands-on work like clay making or sculpting because it's really fun and accomplishing! But I also like digital stuff like animation, illustration & coding and I would really like to learn more about said processes.

4. What don’t you know but need to for your project?

a. What skills might you need to develop?

Something related to digital skills that might involve some coding or illustration.

b. What other information might you need?

Opinion from an interview with sex-workers & some additional stuff

c. How might you acquire these skills or requirements?

Either through our given workshop or do it on my own.
