Monday
Another day another typography activity. Not that I’m complaining because typography itself is a very broad subject and you have so many things that you can explore and learn from it. In fact, I quite enjoy learning about typography because you can give emphasis to certain words merely by changing up the size, thickness, font type or even the way
ITS POSITIONED.
In this particular assignment, we were to create a visual effect for certain texts from a song excerpt. For an example, the sentence “You’re so elegant” can be given visual effect by changing the word “elegant” to “elegant” to give the viewers an added visual effect rather than a normal text. Thus, we are able to send a point across or catch the viewer’s attention by adding focus on certain words.
For my song choice, I chose the song “Johnny it’s The Last Time by Raveena.” I took a four line excerpt from the song and put emphasis on some of the key words of the lyrics. The song itself has a very upbeat and jammable tune to it but the lyrics, however, is quite the contrast as it touches on themes of break-up and some hinted physical violence between the two characters in the song. Thus, creating the visual effect for the lyrics is quite entertaining because the song itself has a contrasting theme which allows me to be creative with the already implied theme.
Another reason why I find this activity to be fun is because once you take the lyrics out of the context of its original song and edit it by giving certain words varying level of emphasis, the readers will think this song is very harsh and dark but when they listen to it, it's actually an upbeat and enjoyable song which I really like because it just creates the element of surprise for the viewer if they actually do care enough to listen to the song.
Wednesday
For our Wednesday's class, we were asked to bring an aluminium can and I never would've guessed that we would be creating a DIY calligraphy pen tip. We were given the creative freedom in terms of choosing our own quote and colour choice, so I chose red and black because its fitting for a quote that revolves around violence as its main theme. Writing using the pen was quite difficult at first but once you got the hang of it, writing was quite easy as it glides on the paper quite easily.
I chose to create two samples with different wording emphasis. For the first one, I somehow put the emphasis on the wrong words and made the main point not stand out- thus explaining my out of place for, is, the and of. But for my second try, I kind of manage to reach a nice balance of emphasis as the main focus of the whole quote is violence, rule and beast and I managed to give the balance by using the bright red colour for the main point and the dark black colour for the connecting words.
In terms of the ink, I found that using acrylic makes the colour look desaturated and quite wobbly in at the end product as you can see with the red coloured words but when I used poster colour for my black wordings, the colour was pretty consistent as in it doesn't look too desaturated and quite solid for most of the time. So if you ask me, I think poster colour is better to use as ink but you have to consistently apply water on the tip of the pen after a few letters as the poster colour was solid and doesn't do well once mixed fully with water as the runny consistency somehow messes its performance, but acrylic colour fares pretty well for long wordings as once it becomes a runny consistency because its more water based rather than solid based although you might get some inconsistency in the colours once you start writing.
