Week 6- Typography

In-Class Assignment

For last weeks class assignment, we were to sketch one item that we could find within the campus area and I chose a plant in a pot.

I chose this as my subject because I am generally drawn towards nature themed objects as I find it to be very soothing and calming. As we finish sketching the subject, we were asked to "break apart" the items by drawing it in different angles and point of views of the subject.

For my views, I chose to draw and overhead view of the vase, close-up of the leaves and a focal point view of the vase and its saucer. This activity allows us to view the items from different angles and makes us see more to it rather than a plain image. Thus, allowing us to see the hidden textures and features of our subject.

After drawing our subject in different point of views, we were asked to create a letter based on the subject matter and as you can see here, I decided to settle on the letter "I". I initially wanted to do an S however it was quite boring to develop it so I chose the latter instead. So for the elements that I applied into the letters are roots as the base, a metal pole as the I with some vines wrapped around it and finally some branches that are branched out from the pole.

Plasticine Typography

After sketching out our desired letter-form, we were to create the letter onto our Plasticine. It was quite a challenge as I had to put extra detail onto the tree branches and carve each leaves individually but overall I think I did okay!

After we were done with the moulding, we were to colour the letter in Photoshop. It personally took me 2-3 hours since I had some trouble in getting the colours right- and I still do detest how it turned out but for my first time, I think its quite neat. The activity kind of allowed us to work on our Photoshop skills and I enjoyed playing around with it as I haven't used Photoshop in quite a while now.

Overall, the activity was very much enjoyable since I do like doing hands-on work as it gives me a deeper form of accomplishment when I am able to complete it.
